A-23.Using Aural Memory運用聽覺記憶
I have often talked in this space about the importance of correct pitch. However,it remains a challenge for almost all shakuhachi players. Today I would like to give a tip about how to maintain good, accurate pitch while you play.
For example, lines in honkyoku often start Ha-Ro. This Ha is the same pitch as Ri. Most people play this Ha by opening holes 2 and 4 and meri-ing slightly.However, even using this fingering, it’s actually quite difficult to get the correct pitch of Ri, and many people just play the note without actually knowing whether they are on pitch or not.
So,the problem of how to be sure of the correct pitch for this Ha is both crucial and, it seems, intractable. There is a way.
You must use the note which comes before as the basis from which to judge pitch.Since Ha-Ro comes at the beginning of a phrase, you must use the last note of the previous phrase. This is often Ri, and in this case you can hold the memory of the Ri pitch firmly in mind as you create the Ha pitch. This case is easiest, since you have the same note directly beforehand to guide you.
Or,take the example of a phrase which begins with a Re after another phrase ending in Hi. For cases like these, what you need to do is to remember what the interval between Hi and Re
sounds like.
Play Hi-Re, Hi-Re, again and again until you have internalized the relationship between these two notes. That way, when Re comes up after a Hi, you will be able to use the Hi as the basis for playing a Re you know for certain is correct.
This may sound obvious, but many people forget what they just played in the last phrase before playing the next one. Instead, if you train yourself to use the last note in the previous phrase as the basis for the first note in the next phrase, your music will attain both better continuity and accuracy.
