5.More Relaxation

Last month I talked about the importance of relaxing, and how to go about it. I mentioned how decreasing the angle of your elbow leads to tension, and this month I would like to go into that in a little bit more detail.

Actually,it is not only the angle of your elbow, but also of your arm itself (your“armpit angle”) that tends to get smaller as your tension increases. Therefore,if you sit in a chair while playing, try the image of your elbow getting just a little bit closer to your knee.

I think you will find that if you are holding excess tension in your arms (and many players do), then having your elbow approach your knee a little bit will help reduce this tension. Give it a try.

Also, upon reading this column last month, the player, Zachary Braverman who is translating it into English, suggested using the image of water flowing through your arms and out your hands. This image is very useful for relaxing one’s arms,
and I have already had a few students have success with it.

Different images work for different people. It doesn’t matter which one you use, as long as the result is good. So, experiment with different images to help you relax, and see which one is right for you.
