A-45.Uses of Exaggeration 誇張手法的應用

"Exaggeration"is something we usually think of as a bad thing, but it can be quite useful in shakuhachi playing, especially when it comes to varying volume, or dynamics.

Dynamics is a crucial aspect of playing well, but unfortunately sorely lacking from most players. There is a good reason for this. You may think that you are varying volume sufficiently, but changes in volume are much more apparent to the player than they are to the audience.

If you assume that the audience can hear your playing as well as you can, then most likely your dynamics are very weak from their point of view.

What you need to do is exaggerate your playing until the variations in volume seem overly much (or very close to it) to you; only at this point will the audience hear what you want them to hear.

At first this may feel unnatural to you, but eventually it will become second nature. It is the process of placing yourself in the shoes of your audience.Only then can you truly hear yourself well enough to make true judgments about dynamics and other elements of your playing.

I recommend you record yourself. Try playing as you would normally play, suchthat the dynamics seem sufficient to your own ear. Then exaggerate for the earsof an imaginary listener sitting across the room. You may be surprised at whichsounds better.

One key thing that sets amazing players apart is their ability to listen to themselves truly/accurately as they play. Assume that those listening to you can only hear a fraction of what you can. Exaggeration is a tool for correcting for this.
