A-36. Nayashi?Kamuri? Furi?

Last month I talked about nayashis, and I received an email asking me about them.Specifically, the email asked if there was a difference in definition between nayashi, kamuri, and furi, all of which seem to refer to the same kind of technique.

The short answer is, "There is no hard and fast way to distinguish these three techniques". However, we can make some useful generalizations.

Nayashi usually refers to the kind of slow, deliberate falling and rising found in Kinko pieces.

The term kamuri refers to the faster change in sound found in koten honkyoku pieces, but there is no strict dividing line between the two in terms of speed.

Furi,by contrast, is a more general term that can refer to either of the two above. For instance, we can say "your furi in line 2 is too shallow/deep".

In the end, it doesn't really matter what we call these techniques. The point isto find the right one for each time and place.
