A-42.Making Mistakes on Purpose故意犯錯

To take an example of what I would like to illustrate, I'll use the example of Tsu meri, which many people tend to play too high. It's relatively easy to play Tsu meri correctly when it's the first note in a phrase, directly after a breath. It becomes more difficult after notes like Tsu, Re or Chi.

As it becomes more difficult, the Tsu meri becomes higher and higher. This is true for a great many people. Because this pattern has become ingrained, these people have conditioned themselves to hear the too-high Tsu meri as correct, so this tendency will not correct itself no matter how much they practice.

This is where making mistakes on purpose comes in.You cannot play a Tsu meri after a Chi with the same feeling as playing it first in a phrase, or even after a Ro, and expect it to be correct. You have to try much harder to get the pitch lower, to exaggerate the Tsu-meri beyond what you think is correct, to end up getting the right note.

For example, I also often speak about varying volume to increase musicality and dynamism of honkyoku. However, even when people try to incorporate this into their playing, they do so so weakly that it hardly has any effect. Their perception of what effect their changes of volume have is far less than the reality.

On the other hand, no one I have witnessed varied their volume too much. If you want to vary your volume effectively, try an experiment: record yourself while changing the volume much more than you think could actually be correct. When you listen, you will be surprised at what you hear.

Vibrato is the same way. People tend to think that the vibrato they play has much more of an effect than it does. Instead, it can be barely perceptible to whoever is listening. Try recording yourself playing a much more intense vibrato than you would normally feel comfortable with, and chances are it will be much closer to the effect you really want.

These are just a few of the ways you can make mistakes intentionally by playing exaggerations of the techniques in question.Since most players have conditioned themselves to think that too little effort is enough, this can help break you out of ruts that are holding you back and“recondition” your ear.
