A-47.Expression表現方式

I often use this space to stress the importance of correct pitch. It is a bridge you have to cross when you think of the shakuhachi as a musical instrument.

I know that there are many people for whom the questions of pitch and musicality are not central concerns. There is a certain validity to this viewpoint, as indeed for large parts of its history the shakuhachi was not considered a musical instrument per se.

This view is fine if the primary purpose of your playing is solitary meditation, but when you play for people I believe you have to think of it as"music." In the latter case, no one wants to be subjected to atone-deaf shakuhachi performance.

There is an even more important consideration than pitch, though: expression. Sometimes you can be so focused on pitch that you forget that music is also about expression. Correct pitch is necessary for expression, but it is not sufficient for it.

Once you are comfortable that your pitch is (at least mostly!) correct, you must also think about what kind of expression you are aiming for.

Desired expression will inform everything about each note you play, from volume to color to how it fades away. This will transform a technically correct melody into something personal worth listening to.

Pitch and expression: two sides of the coin of performance that you can polish.
