A-34.When Fingers Move Too Quickly 當手指移動過快時
Many people have problems playing very fast phrases smoothly. One such example is“Haru-no-Umi”’s phrase “Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Ri-Ro-Tsu-Re/Chi-Ri-Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Hi-I”.Here I will introduce a hint to help play these rapid phrases more skillfully.
When they can’t play a rapid phrase well, most people think they are moving their fingers too slowly. This may be true some of the time, but in most cases the real reason is that the notes of the phrase are not spaced evenly. This unevenness is not cause by moving your fingers too slowly, as many people think, but instead by moving them too rapidly in almost all cases.
Different fingers have different personalities in playing the shakuhachi. For example,the index finger can move very fast while the ring finger tends to move more slowly. This causes a discrepancy in speed.
Many people think that their fingers aren’t moving quickly enough, and they concentrate on making them move faster and faster. What ends up happening is that the index fingers end up moving very quickly, while the ring fingers lag behind.
One more reason that the spacing of notes can become uneven is when you move from your right to your left hand, or vice versa. If you spend too much time focusing on speed alone, this can become faster than the other notes, as well.
Whichever the case, one of the secrets to playing rapid phrases well is to concentrate on making the notes all equal lengths, not just playing every single note as fast as you can.
