A-9.Use Your Tongue to Meri ?!
I’ve talked about meri here before many times, but I think I will take it up again this month.
I’ve said many times that meri is accomplished by decreasing the distance between your mouth and the blowing edge. When you are able to increase and decrease this distance efficient, then your meris and karis will become more efficient as well.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that very good players don’t move the angle of the flute very much, yet their meris come out perfectly. This is because their control of the distance to the blowing edge has become so efficient.
What I’ve described above is most of how to achieve meris, but not all of it. One other aspect is to change the condition inside your mouth.Indeed, changing the position of your tongue inside your mouth will change the pitch, and it is more likely to make it lower than higher.
Meris can become even more efficient if you combine changing the position of your tongue with the distance between your mouth and the blowing edge. Again, this has to be done in just the right way and with the right timing.
I think that very good players do this unconsciously.
However, it takes a long, longtime until you start doing it unconsciously, so experiment doing it consciously instead.
Who knows, you might even begin to like practicing meris.
