Whether you're a pro or amateur, getting a sound you want involves some of the same challenges, things like keeping your lips in the right shape, your tongue in the right place within your mouth, the flute held correctly, etc.

In other words: form.

A form-based approach allows for easy understanding, easy correction, and a quick learning curve. However, form can only get you about 70% of the way there. How, then, do you make up for the other 30%?

My teacher Katsuya Yokoyama once told of a sound that he remembered from a dream. This sound was so wondrous that no matter how well he played, he never reached a sound to match that of his dream.

In other words, you must have an image, or a memory of a sound to inspire and inform your practice. It doesn't even need to be a shakuhachi sound per se, just an idea to strive toward. This is the final 30%.
