[font="][size=14.0pt]This month we have another column on pitch. [/size][/font]
[font="][size=14.0pt]When you are playing Ri (or Hi in the higher octave), then open your thumb from the back hole, the pitch becomes I. This is sometimes also called"Go-no-Hi," with the character for 5 written inside the"Hi." [/size][/font]
[font="][size=14.0pt]Whatever it's called, this note, when played in the first (Otsu) octave,should be the same pitch as the Ro in the second (Kan) octave. When played in Kan, it note should be the same as "Go no Ha," or Ro in the third octave. [/size][/font]
[font="][size=14.0pt]These notes are often played too low. The reason is often that, when you take your thumb off the rear hole, you leave it placed on the shakuhachi close to the hole. This affects the air flow and makes the note lower than it's correct pitch.[/size][/font]
[font="][size=14.0pt]In fact, beginners often don't lift their fingers far enough away from the hole, a tendency which can work against them by subtly lowering pitch. This is particularly problematic with the rear hole, though, because taking the finger off the rear hole impacts the overall balance of the flute. [/size][/font]
[font="][size=14.0pt]If the flute's balance deteriorates when you take your back finger off,then you are not holding the flute correctly. This will also influence how well you can repeatedly hit the back hole; you cannot perform this correctly unless the flute is balanced with or without the hole closed. [/size][/font][font="][size=14.0pt]
