Today I will discuss what I will call the "Ultimate Meri Method." I have actually talked about it in this space several times, but hadn't found just the right way of framing the concept. This time I think I have.

Previously I stated that you can meri a note by closing off the mouthpiece(utaguchi) opening. The concept is simple: the more efficiently you can cover utaguchi surface area (imagine this as the circle you see when holding the shakuhachi directly up to your eye to look down the tube), the more efficient your meris will be.

You can accomplish this by pushing down with the finger which covers the fourth hole (the one closest to the mouthpiece), or you can do it by lifting upon the thumb of your bottom hand, thus tilting the flute back. If you perfect fine control either way, your meris will improve tremendously.

However, it's often hard to get your muscles to do what your brain thinks is so simple. At times like this we can use the help of imagery. The correct image can help guide bodily movement in a way that abstract concepts cannot. In this case, try out the following image:
The mouthpiece moves toward your lower gums.

This includes both a change of angle, a lowering of the flute as a whole, and for some even slight rotation.

If this doesn't help your meris, then most likely you're already playing all notes slightly meri. Come to think of it, perhaps one of the most difficultthings about meri is playing your non-meri notes kari enough.
